Big John's Tavern
About Big John's Tavern
You'll hear the bass thumping right out on East Bay Street before you even hit the door. Big John's isn't trying to hide its age. It's a proper Charleston dive that's been kicking around forever, and the bouncer doesn't care about your guest list. You hand over your ID, squeeze past the threshold, and you're hit with that thick mix of old wood, spilled beer, and cheap bourbon. It's dark in here, like high noon never made it past the front windows.
The bands set up in the tight corner by the wall because there's barely a real stage to speak of. You're standing right on the floor with your toes touching the monitors, and you can't hear yourself think once they strike the first chord. People are spilling drinks, elbows are bumping, and nobody's trying to act cool for an Instagram story. It's loud, it's sweaty, and the sound bounces off the low ceiling until your teeth vibrate.
You head to the bar for another round when you need a breather, but the bartender's moving fast and doesn't have time for small talk. Cash hits the sticky wood, a cold can of domestic drops down, and someone bumps your elbow right before the heavy guitar kicks back in.
